SAF 2008 National Convention: "Climate and Forests: Impacts, Perspectives and Solutions
by: Greg Bigin & Rod Brevig-SAF 2008 National Convention Program Committee Co-Chairs
What timing!! Our Society of American Foresters 2008 National Convention will host informed and valuable scientific and professional dialogue about changing climates, impacts on forests, communities and people who depend upon forest values important to our Nation's and World's basic quality of life.
From biological, ecologic and environmental services viewpoints, to fashioning adaptable solutions and implementing effective practices, What is happening? Who are the leaders and what are they doing? For example:
*Convention keynoter, Michael J. Walsh, Executive Vice President, Chicago Climate Exchange, leads the world's first and North America's only active, voluntary and legally binding integrated trading system to reduce emissions of all six greenhouse gases, with offset projects in North America and Worldwide. Mr. Walsh is aware of the important role of forests and forestry in the climate change dialogue and action arena!
*In a two part program where known, respected experts and practitioners share "Forest Management Solutions for Mitigating Climate Change in the US" sponsored by SAF's Climate Change and Carbon Sequestration Task Force, you'll learn the latest thinking in this important subject area! Useful learning you can use to help people and communities understand how professional foresters and natural resource managers can provide workable solutions.
*General session speaker Henry Diaz, Research Climatologist, NOAA Climate Diagnostic Center will help us understand "Climate as a Variable" as will Science and Technical speakers who will discuss tree species and forest impacts in the Eastern U.S., Gulf Coastal Forests, Longleaf Pine and forest conditions in the Sierra-Nevada mountains. Other speakers will share ecological forestry and natural history perspectives and case studies relevant to managing forested watersheds and implementing improvement practices. Both forest threats and opportunities will be explored. SAF 2008 will update your skill base in this rapidly developing and important subject area.
*General session speaker Gary Gero, President, California Climate Action Registry, leads an important organization in the very important trend setting State of California who is allocating significant resources to achieve "carbon neutrality".
From the important topics of Agro-forestry, Forest Management for carbon sequestration, from tropical to temperate forests, from rural and urban forests in Nepal, Ohio, Las Vegas, and the western US, how are we cooperating and governing to realize environmental and economic services important to communities and people? Learn about the practices used, investments, and results sought as well as progress to achieving agreed to goals. What needs to happen to achieve sustainable communities and forests thru improved policy and practices!
SAF 2008 Join Us!! For outstanding learning and networking opportunities. You'll gain increased knowledge from our general, scientific, technical and poster presentations and dialogues. See You in Reno, Nevada, November 5-9, 2008
